How well do the ipod rechargers that you can plug into the cigarette lighter in your vehicle work?

and if drive an older model vehicle can the cigarette lighter destroy the ipod with too much voltage or surges?

btw, the cigarette lighter recharger says on package that it prevents "Surging"..so how this would do that?..lol
