What type of bug/insect lives after being separated into two parts?

I swatted a bug or roach down and it was cut into two parts, both of which continued to live and move. It was not one part head and the other part body, it was two different parts of the body, I suppose one contained more of it including the head. It was extremely disturbing and disgusting. Why is this and what type of bug could this have been?
