Is Miami just too hot during Mid June, do you get burnt going to the beach?

I live in the UK and was looking to go Miami in Mid June with a few friends, I have been checking out Ft Lauderdale as a place to stay.

Is it safe? Does it have good beaches and how is the nightlife? Are there chilled out places to eat? Is it expensive?

Most importantly is it too hot during June to enjoy a holiday? Would we just be locked up in our rooms?
